Milen Care continued to celebrate their silver jubilee with an open to all Carrom competition in March. The competition saw 23 players take part, and regular centre attendee Ebrahim bhai Mamaniat went on to win the tournament.
The elderly centre has been providing an essential service to its users for over a quarter of a century, and during that time one of the most popular activities is the Carrom board.
With the competition open to all challengers, local people took advantage but soon realised the Milen team were not to be trifled with. Ebrahim G Karolia said, “It was real fun and I enjoyed playing. I was surprised how talented the elderly people are.”
When jokingly asked how it felt losing to someone twice his age, in jest he remarked “Well I won’t be telling people I entered the competition… In all fairness all I can say is the best man won.”
Khalid Mohammed, who took time off from work to play, made it to the semi-final before being knocked out by Saeed bhai Dadhiwala. He said, “I thoroughly enjoyed the games. The elderly people at Milen play extremely well.”
In a final of best out of five games Ebrahim bhai took on fellow Milen member Saeed bhai with an excited crowd watching.
Ebrahim bhai won the competition with a result of 3 games to 1. He said, “I’ve played Mr Dadhiwala on many occasions so I knew I had a very strong opponent. As always he played well, but I was fortunate to beat him on the day.”
Chair of Milen Care, Aziz Daji, was an early victim in the competition , he told us “Having been knocked out of the carom competition, I have been impressed with the skill of the Milen members who took part. It was very enjoyable and I’d like to congratulate Ebrahim bhai on his win and thank everyone for taking part in such a a successful event.”
The silver jubilee competition was an added extra for the celebrations. The annual competition will take place later in May and you can count on it being as competitive as ever.
