Donations made during Ramadhan by local people have been distributed to meet short term and long term needs. Around £120,000 was raised during the devastating assault by Israel on Gaza which saw the destruction of homes, Masjids, schools and livelihoods as well as of course the murder of innocent civilians.
In the immediate IMWS sent the first wave of donations to help provide emergency relief to civilians caught in the bombings. That money went to provide medical aid, basic essentials, food and shelter. The remaining donations will go towards helping to rebuild the devastated lives of Gazans.
A schools project will provide school bags to around 700 students with the essentials to help them re-start their studies.
Jomah Al Najjar, Chair of Palestinian Welfare, highlighted the conditions these children face and said “After two weeks hundreds thousands students in Gaza Strip will return to start the first semester of the educational year 2014-2015, they will go on foot, will sit in the damaged schools, destroyed school, in the squares and in the opened areas,,, this just to learn and to educate.”
The aid supplied through local donations will help these children gain an education, even if it is in such trying conditions.
A regeneration project launched with PWH will help rebuild farms and businesses destroyed by the recent attacks. The programme is based around helping to get Gazans back on their feet with a view to long term sustainability.
During Ramadhaan donations to help the victims of the Syrian conflict were also received and have been distributed through reputable organisations to reach those in need.
Both the Gaza and Syria appeals have remained opened throughout the year and generosity from local people continues to help these victims trapped in desperate situations beyond the power of their control.
